President Donald Trump has privately floated the idea of funding construction of a border wall with Mexico through the US military budget in conversations with advisers two sources confirmed to CNN Tuesday

Sources close to the president have confirmed Trump is secretly floating the idea that the Mexican border wall should be funded by the budget allocated to the military in the omnibus spending bill that was passed recently.

The Post also reported that three people who are knowledgeable about Trump's meeting with Ryan observed that he barely reacted to Trump's idea of the military backing construction of the wall.

And he's tweeted that building "a great Border Wall" is "all about National Defense" and called to "Build WALL through M!", meaning the military.

Basically, the Pentagon can't make a shift like that without an act of Congress (with 60 votes for approval), which puts Trump right back where he started ... in a puddle of his own frustration.

Trump threw Washington into a tizzy on Friday when he threatened to veto the omnibus spending bill, in part because it didn't include the $25 billion U.S. he'd tried to secure for the wall in a last-minute bargaining spree.

So far, government funds have only been allocated to fencing along the border, but no new wall is now being built.

Trump - upset about potential disappointment among his supporters and invoking "national security" - is now reportedly eyeing the $700 billion allotted for the Pentagon, a sum he touted as "historic", to provide funding for the wall.

The Washington Post reports that Trump has been "privately pushing" the Pentagon to have the military cough up the cash.

The president went on to tout how the military would be investing the new funding, highlighting money tagged for tanks, F-35 fighter jets, Black Hawk helicopters and new naval ships. But she did say Trump will work with the White House counsel's office to ensure any actions on border wall funding is legal and within his executive authorities.

However, no new wall is now being built. It was Mr. Trump's key campaign promise. Not only will Democrats take a hard pass military spending paying for his fence, but Pentagon officials, per White House advisers, "may also blanch at the possibility". "First Mexico was supposed to pay for it, then United States taxpayers, and now our men and women in uniform?"

The urgency to strike a deal reflected the growing sense that the spending bill represented the last chance for the Trump administration to secure substantial wall funding, at least in his first term. He wants to have the USA military fund the construction of the project.

"I can't get into the specifics of that at this point, but I can tell you that the conversation of building the wall is ongoing and we're going to continue moving forward in that process", Sanders said.
