A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahusaid the leader was taken to hospital on Tuesday for tests following an illness, Telegraph.co.uk reports.

"The prime minister is suffering from a high fever and is coughing", a spokesman for the 68-year-old Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu's office has taken the precaution of stating that Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman will manage Wednesday's cabinet meeting if he is unable to attend.

Israeli police investigators have also been grilling Netanyahu for corruption over his involvement in cases 1000 and 2000. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing.

Netanyahu's wife Sara and son Yair were questioned separately at fraud squad headquarters near Tel Aviv, as was Shaul Elovitch, Bezeq´s largest shareholder, media reported.

Police, who have yet to make a recommendation about charges in the case, reportedly questioned the prime minister in his official residence in Jerusalem al-Quds. The final decision about whether to prosecute rests with the Israeli attorney general.

Earlier this month Trump said he was "thinking about" visiting Israel to seal his momentous policy decision, however Hadashot reported without citing sources that his schedule would not allow it and he was instead contemplating a visit in July. Political analysts say such support may erode if the investigations against Netanyahu intensify. Support for Netanyahu's Likud party remains strong in opinion polls.
