FTC launches probe on Facebook's data privacy practices

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook's privacy practices following a week of privacy scandals including allegations a Trump-affiliated political consulting firm got data inappropriately from millions of Facebook users. Grassley said. "It will also examine how such data may be misused or improperly transferred and what steps companies like Facebook can take to better protect personal information of users and ensure more transparency in the process".

Facebook said in a statement on Monday that the company remains "strongly committed" to protecting people's information and that it welcomes the opportunity to answer the FTC's questions.

Facebook Inc.is heading toward its worst month in more than five years after an analyst report warned of a temporary pullback in advertising and the FTC confirmed it's investigating the social network's privacy practices. The firm sought to construct psychographic profiles of voters through an app that culled profile details from Facebook users as well as tens of millions of their friends, who may not have been aware their information was collected in the first place.

If the FTC finds Facebook violated terms of the consent decree, it has the power to fine the company thousands of dollars a day per violation, which could add up to billions of dollars.

That data was then passed to Cambridge Analytica, the British research firm that has been connected both with the Trump campaign during the 2016 U.S. elections, and with the Brexit campaign in the UK.

Several Judiciary Committee members had pressed Grassley to hold the hearing. Facebook stopped allowing developers to collect information about app users' friends in 2015.

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee and U.S. Senate Commerce Committee have already formally asked Zuckerberg to appear at a congressional hearing. Zuckerberg said last week he would be willing to testify if he is the right person at the company to speak to lawmakers. 27% of participants said the recent data-mining scandal wouldn't change how they use Facebook. He also said sorry in full-page advertisements in British and USA newspapers.

In a statement, Will Castleberry, Facebook's vice president for state and local public policy, said: "Attorneys General across the country have raised important questions and we appreciate their interest".

USA auto parts retailer Pep Boys suspended all advertising on Facebook on Monday while wireless speaker maker Sonos said in a blog post it will remove advertising from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Alphabet's YouTube for one week.

Opinion polls published on Sunday in the United States and Germany cast doubt over the trust people have in Facebook.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday apologized to Facebook users in full-page ads in nine British and USA for the massive "breach of trust" by the company.
