Madhya Pradesh Journalist Investigating Sand Mafia Killed by Speeding Truck in Bhind Horrific Accident Caught on CCTV

A local journalist was among two persons killed when an SUV rammed into their bike in Bhojpur district, with the family alleging that it was a case of murder and a former village head was behind it, police said today.

He had conducted two "sting" journalistic reports about sand mafia for a regional TV station, News World.

Sandeep was rushed to hospital in Dial 100 vehicle but he succumbed while receiving treatment at the trauma centre. An audio conversation of the officer in question was aired by his channel after which the officer was transferred, said sources.

Madhya Pradesh has a history of the sand mafia threatening, attacking and killing opponents of illegal mining.

The video footage captured on camera shows a speeding truck running over Journalist Sandeep Sharma who was riding the bike and fleeing the scene near Kotwali police station at 8.55 am. The mob set the SUV on fire, Avakash Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Bhojpur, said. He was facing threat from a police officer whom he had exposed a few months ago and had submitted a complaint to the SP citing threat to his life.

Recently, he investigated illegal sand mining case in MP in which he had accused a police officer of being involved with the sand mafia.

Bhind SP Prashant Khare said an offence under Section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) has been registered in connection with the death, reported The Indian Express (IE).

Chouhan assured a group of journalists in Bhopal that strict action would be taken against whoever was responsible.

Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia also condemned the incident and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. "He was killed in broad daylight", Scindia said, adding that the media "is being crushed under BJP rule".

Khushwaha told Al Jazeera that Sharma was not provided police protection. "In last few years, they have killed at least half a dozen policemen, officials and journalists in this one state alone".

Sharma's death, meanwhile, triggered panic among other journalists in the region. Naveen used to work for Dainik Bhaskar, a Hindi newspaper while Vijay Singh used to work for a magazine.
