Bancroft, Smith admit ball-tampering: Highlights

Malcolm Turnbull says he's disappointed with the scandal involving captain Steve Smith

Western Australian Cameron Bancroft was summoned for a chat after he was caught on camera putting something suspicious in his trousers at Cape Town.

"Unfortunately I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and I want to be here because I'm accountable for my actions as well".

In a TV video footage Australian opening batsman Cameron Bancroft can be seen taking an object out of his pocket which he further uses to rub on the ball while fielding on day 3 of the ongoing Test encounter at Newlands.

Footage emerged of Australia opener Cameron Bancroft using a foreign object on the ball and then hiding it down his pants - an action that has seen him charged by match officials.

South African skipper Faf du Plessis was reportedly furious after the clips of Bancroft's supposed ball tampering were shown in the South African dressing room.

Bancroft appeared to empty his pockets while talking to the umpires, showing them a black sunglasses bag from his pocket but no yellow object.

Steve Smith said he was embarrassed and takes responsibility for the actions of his side after they were charged with attempting to change the condition of the ball on Saturday, but he will not be stepping down as captain.

There were boos from a capacity crowd at Newlands when the incident was shown on the big screen at the ground. "The umpires didn't see it change the way the ball was behaving or how it looked or anything like that, so it was a poor choice and deeply regrettable", Smith said. "I've been charged with attempting to change the condition of the ball", Bancroft was quoted as saying by CA Twitter handle. We have this yellow tape in our kit.

Kevin Pietersen also tweeted regarding the incident, saying My 2cents worth - This will be Darren Lehmann's greatest test as a coach, cos I will struggle to believe that this was all Bancroft's idea.

When asked who was responsible, Smith said it was a decision made by the players and not the coaching staff. We spoke about it (ball-tampering) at lunch.

"I'm not proud of what's happened", Smith said. The series is tied at one match apiece.

Amidst the controversy, De Villiers completed his half-century which defined his character completely as the hosts lost few quick wickets after the loss of Markram who scored a classy 84.

There was no immediate confirmation from the International Cricket Council (ICC). "I still think I'm the right the person for the job", Smith said. Smith, who held a world record-equalling five catches in the first innings, had already added to his tally by catching first innings century-maker Dean Elgar off Pat Cummins for 14.

Now, Bancroft has admitted that he was tampering with the condition of the ball in a press conference following the third days play. During their discussion, Bancroft removed the item from his pocket rather than where he had put it earlier. It does look like it's a bit of sandpaper.
