Self-Driving Uber Car Crashes In Arizona — Kills Pedestrian

Police in Tempe, Arizona, released video on Wednesday of the fatal crash involving an autonomous Uber auto, providing a startling piece of evidence in a case that could shape laws and public perceptions around driverless vehicles.

The video shows what the vehicle and its safety driver could see before the collision with the woman, and also offers footage of the driver. The person who was inside the vehicle at the time was identified as Rafaela Vasquez, 44.

"It's very clear it would have been hard to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway", the chief told the outlet. Liliana Duran with Tempe Police Wednesday afternoon, combines video taken by an exterior camera with video taken by an interior camera.

Police have released few details about the accident that occurred Sunday night in Tempe, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, while the vehicle was driving in autonomous mode.

In an exclusive interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir said car-recorded video of the crash showed just how quickly it happened.

The video also shows the driver at the wheel, who appears to be looking down. The vehicular crimes unit is investigating, and the department anticipates "submitting the case for review to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office", according to a police statement.
