A yellow cap left on during the manufacturing process can cover one of the two Kidde smoke alarm sensors and compromise the its ability to detect smoke

Smoke alarm manufacturer Kidde recalled almost half a million smoke alarms on Wednesday because they could malfunction during a fire.

Mebane-based Kidde is recalling more than 450,000 smoke alarms because of a manufacturing defect that could compromise the smoke alarms' ability to detect smoke.

This could pose a risk to any owners of the detector in not being warned of a fire in their home.

"KIDDE" is printed on the front center of the smoke alarm. Both have date codes of 2016 Sep.

The alarms were sold at Menards, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other websites from September 2016 through January 2018, according to the recall. They were also sold online via Amazon and the Kidde website.

KIDDE is printed on the front center of the affected dual-sensor alarms and the model number and date code are printed on the back

Those with these affected smoke alarms to urged to remove them and visually inspect them for the presence of the aforementioned yellow cap.

If you own one of these smoke alarms, look through the opening on the side of the alarm to see if a yellow cap is present.

Consumers should not remove or discard the recalled alarm until a new one is received and installed.

Immediately contact Kidde to receive instructions and request a free replacement smoke alarm.
