Harold has GOP establishment backing and has received campaign contributions from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. Voters also picked a likely successor to longtime Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D) as well as the winners in primaries for governor, attorney general, and legislative races.

As for the congressional primary, conservative Democrat Rep. Dan Lipinski narrowly defeated progressive activist Marie Newman in the 3 District, 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent.

Coming after primaries in Texas and a special election in Pennsylvania that caused some upheaval, the contests in IL gave at least a temporary boost to the establishment. Daniel Biss, to win the nomination. The heavily Hispanic and Democratic district covers Mexican, Puerto Rican and Central American swaths of Chicago and several suburbs. IL owes more than $15 billion in unpaid bills and has a pension debt of more than a quarter-trillion dollars - the highest in the nation.

Rauner is considered one of the most vulnerable Republican governors in America, and now faces Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, an heir to the Hyatt Hotel founder and former national co-chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. Pat Quinn by 2 percentage points.

So Illinois, a more conventionally blue state, is another good sign for Democrats.

The first-term governor congratulated his challenger "on her principled stand" and called on Republicans to join together for the fall contest against Democrat J.B. Pritzker.

"To those of you around the state who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear: I have heard you", Rauner told supporters in his victory speech.

Newman campaigned as the "true Democrat", blasting Lipinski for opposing abortion and voting against same-sex marriage and former president Barack Obama's signature health care overhaul.

Lipinski is one of the few Democrats to vote against the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. He also voted for religious freedom bills that are viewed as making it easier for private businesses to discriminate against gay customers. The encounter buoyed her candidacy, driving attention and money to her upstart campaign.

But hey, the general election will be here before we know it - only 7 months, 16 days to go.

Wednesday morning, Rauner told "The Big John and Ramblin' Ray Show" on WLS that he will start a listening tour to get input from IL voters. "Those two actually have a lot more in common than Jeanne Ives". Jan Schakowsky (D) and Luis V. Gutiérrez (D). He also engaged in a long budget standoff with the state legislature that left IL $15 billion behind on its bills and triggered multiple downgrades that pushed the state's credit rating nearly to junk status.

Pritzker, 53, poured almost $70 million into capturing a Democratic nomination that proved tougher than initially expected, while Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor, dumped more than $50 million in his campaign fund since spending just over $65 million on his 2014 election.

He will try to win a second term against billionaire Pritzker, who won the Democratic primary over five other candidates, including businessman Chris Kennedy and state Sen.

State Sen. Kwame Raoul won the eight-way Democratic race for the state's top lawyer, edging out former Gov.

In Rockford, four Democrats fought for their party's nomination in the 67th district.

Rauner claimed victory during the 10 o'clock news, before media outlets had even called the race in his favor.
