Memphis Is Taking a Huge Risk on Penny Hardaway

The team failed to make the NCAA tournament during his tenure. Maybe that's why they "low-balled" him.

Memphis fired Tubby Smith after he became just the second coach since 1970 to fail to reach postseason play during his first two seasons. This announcement will be shown live on WMC Action News 5 (due to the school's digital restrictions, we will not be able to stream it online). His biggest move came with his own AAU program, and he became coach at Memphis East High School, which won a third straight Tennessee Class AAA title last weekend. He signed a three-year deal - very short for a coach these days - and though his compensation wasn't immediately released, it is expected to be low. We can safely assume that means his deal won't be almost as lucrative as the one Smith signed in 2016, one worth $15.45 million over five years.

Succeed or fail, the city of Memphis will always owe a debt to Penny Hardaway. A dynamic 6-foot-7 point guard, he played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association and was a four-time All-Star before knee injuries took their toll. Hardaway was a star athlete at Memphis University in the early 1990s where he played two seasons of basketball for the Tigers. Born and raised in Memphis, Penny went on to play for the Memphis Tigers as well.

MORE: Martial in, Shaw out: Who should stay or go at Man Utd this summer? You've just got to work hard. Asked if Shaw can fight his way back into Mourinho's plans, Young said: "Yes, of course".

It was at Memphis East where Hardaway coached prize recruit James Wiseman, who he could ultimately persuade to attend Memphis.

Tigers fans are anxious to see what Hardaway can do for the program and have high expectations for the program in the upcoming years.
