Black Panther reigns over the box office for fifth weekend with $27m

Historic numbers all around and Black Panther isn't quite done. It's a big milestone for Sony Pictures as it is only the studio's second film ever to accomplish the feat, along with 2002's Spider-Man.

In South Africa, Black Panther adds the record of all-time highest-grossing film to its previous records of the highest Saturday and February opening weekend and, of course, the biggest super hero film of all time. Black Panther has now raked in $605.4M domestically and an impressive $1.182 billion globally. Interestingly, it is the fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. "Tomb Raider" will have to settle for second place, earning a rather weak $23.5 million in what should have been its strongest weekend, as CBR noted.

Before "Avatar" the last film to spend five weeks on top was 1999's "The Sixth Sense".

Roadside Attractions' Christian drama film "I Can Only Imagine" opened in third place with an estimated 17.06 million dollars. These new releases dropped A Wrinkle in Time to fourth place where it earned $16.6 million, to bring its two-week total to $61.1 million. The film now has a global total of $126 million, with a release in Japan coming this Wednesday.

FA Cup: Manchester United, Tottenham through to semi-finals
They have not lost there in the Premier League since August, when Chelsea repeated last season's FA Cup semifinal success. The semi-finals are to take place on the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April.

The teen romantic dramedy Love, Simon debuted with $11.5 million this weekend and very positive reviews to suggest that it's staying-power could lead to a long run at the box office. The film based on the popular novel was right around expectations and I'm predicting a $30-$40 million domestic gross. The horror film brought in $4.8 million and is approaching $20 million domestically.

Rounding out the top tier are "Game Night" at No. 6 with $5.6 million, "Peter Rabbit" at No. 7 with $5.2 million, "Strangers: Prey at Night" at No. 8 with $4.8 million, "Red Sparrow" at No. 9 with $4.5 million and "Death Wish" at No. 10 with $3.4 million.

The Ryan Coogler-helmed comic book movie, the MCUs first led by a black superhero character, is still doing big money overseas as well, but with Chinese audiences dwindling substantially in its second weekend in their country, the worldwide box office (now at $1.2 billion) won't come anywhere close to the likes of Avatar and Titanic or even The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
