Deaths exodus as two Syria assaults escalate

On Thursday, thousands fled the enclave of Eastern Ghouta as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government forces advanced into rebel-held areas - making it the largest mass displacement in the enclave since regime forces and their allies first began their siege of the area in 2013.

At least 18 civilians have died in Turkish airstrikes against the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in northern Syria, the national observatory for human rights in Syria (ONDUS) said on Friday.

The Syrian war entered its eighth year this week having killed half a million people and driven more than 11 million from their homes, including almost 6 million who have fled overseas in one of the worst refugee crises of modern times. At least 6.1 million were internally displaced while another 5.6 million fled overseas.

How serious is the situation near Damascus?

In northern Syria, where Kurdish officials Turkish shelling and airstrikes killed at least 22 civilians on Friday in the town of Afrin, the Turkish military urged civilians to leave and the Syrian Kurdish militiamen to surrender to besieging Turkish forces.

Residents have told BBC News there is intense street fighting between rebels and government soldiers in some parts of the enclave.

The Russian defence ministry said 2,000 people had left by early morning on Friday. It said Russian aircraft had carried out the strikes.

The Observatory put the early figure at several hundred. The UN children's agency assisted by putting up three shelters for families and children in the suburb area of Damascus.
