Jacob Zuma to be prosecuted on corruption charges

Abrahams expected to announce decision on Zuma corruption charges

Zuma, who earned the nickname "Teflon president" for effectively surviving a number of scandals, resigned from his position as president last month after calls for his resignation from his own party.

He even went on trial in 2006 but the case against him collapsed when the prosecution said it was not ready to proceed.

The case was controversially dropped by the National Prosecuting Authority in 2009, shortly before Zuma won the presidency.

He was facing his ninth no-confidence vote in Parliament before he left office.

Zuma was told earlier on Friday of the decision to reinstate the charges first served on him in 2007 in a multi-billion rand‚ allegedly corrupt‚ deal.

In total, he faces one charge of racketeering, two charges of corruption, one charge of money laundering and 12 of fraud.

Mueller subpoenas Trump Organization
The Trump Organization is an umbrella entity that encompasses hundreds of companies owned by the president through a trust. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders referred questions about the matter on Thursday to the Trump Organization.

"I am of the view that a trial court would be the most appropriate forum for these issues to be ventilated and to be decided upon".

Mr Abrahams said: "Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done - I am mindful that everyone is equal before the law".

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, challenged the chief prosecutor's decision, but Zuma successfully avoided prosecution during his presidency.

"This brings to an end a decade of litigation over the initial NPA decision in 2009 to withdraw the charges levelled against former President Zuma".

Magashule said Zuma should be treated as innocent until proven guilty by the courts. In 2016, South Africa's High Court judged that the chief prosecutor's decision to set aside the charges was "irrational" - a ruling that was upheld by the Supreme Court past year. Zuma has since repaid some of the money, as ordered by the court. Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo's State Capture Inquiry will soon begin investigating accusations that the president and his allies facilitated widespread corruption to benefit the Gupta family.
