"From my perspective, the [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] addresses one of the principal threats that we deal with from Iran". "There would be some concern (in the region), I think, about how we meant to address that particular threat if it was not being addressed through the JCPOA".

Hook said the meetings in Vienna had been productive, insisting that "the U.S.is meeting its commitments under the Iran nuclear deal and we are holding Iran accountable for its commitments".

"When you look at the Iran deal, I think it's awful".

Trump's decision this week to replace Tillerson with Mike Pompeo as secretary of state has been widely seen as another bad omen for the agreement. Pompeo, by contrast, has been a vocal critic of the accord.

Trump's January ultimatum set May 12 as the next key deadline, when he will have to decide whether to re-impose a slew of US sanctions that were lifted as part of the nuclear deal.

"Frightening and threatening the world's business and economic communities not to work with Iran constitute a clear violation of different articles of the JCPOA", said Araqchi in reference to Washington's policy, under Trump, toward the Iran deal.

In January, Trump said he would cancel sanctions waivers for Iran issued as part of the nuclear deal and withdraw from the pact negotiated by his predecessor unless major changes were made by his stated deadline of May 12.

"It remains to be seen whether the Europeans will want to continue trying to accommodate the Trump administration now that Mr. Tillerson isn't in charge of the State Department", said former United Kingdom diplomat Peter Jenkins.

It remains to be seen whether Pompeo will continue Tillerson's efforts to try to save the deal by working out side deals with European allies Britain, Germany, and France.

China has always been North Korea's most important ally but has been on board with the sanctions agreed at the United Nations. The drills are expected to be held in April, but no official announcement has been made about when they will take place.

U.S. President Donald Trump, however, has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the deal over the objections of European Union member states.

Signatories to Iran's 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers have held a new round of their periodic meetings to review its implementation amid U.S. threats to kill the multilateral accord.

"In recent days the Trump administration has, if anything, been toughening its stance on what it would take to make the Iran deal worth staying in", Ceren said.

European diplomats met with USA counterparts led by Brian Hook in Berlin on Thursday. The European countries all continue to express support for the nuclear deal while also showing willingness to try to address Trump's concerns.

The agreement allows Iran to pursue a nuclear energy program - for strictly civilian use - in return for the lifting of longstanding economic sanctions.

Despite Trump's abrupt firing of Tillerson, the outgoing secretary of state's top aide, Brian Hook, will attend the meetings in Europe, a State Department spokesperson said.

United States withdrawal from the nuclear deal would nearly certainly lead to greater regional instability and could trigger retaliation by Iran or its proxies in the Middle East. Every problem is Iran.

President Donald Trump's sacking of his top diplomat, Rex Tillerson, signals America's likely withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, and raises the risk of a possible military confrontation with the regime in Tehran.
