'A negative impact': Donald Trump's NAFTA threat will backfire, Trudeau warns

Marie is a part of a Canadian tour of regions that could suffer the most as a result of any USA imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Justin Trudeau is telling steel workers in Sault Ste.

"The exemption that Canada got wasn't some big favour they were able to do us", Trudeau told SooToday at Algoma Steel.

He spoke to teporters and a group of ArcelorMittal Dofasco employees after touring one of the steel maker's steel galvanizing mills in Hamilton.

As the United States tries to light a fire under NAFTA negotiations, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada will not be bullied or pressured by the United States as part of those talks. "We'll always be at the table", Champagne said.

Ferguson says U.S. President Donald Trump's threatened 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium "impacted on a lot of places in Hamilton that ship to the United States, including an erosion of consumer confidence".

Other stops on Trudeau's tour include Hamilton, Sault Ste. "We all put our efforts into globalization in the past decades, and I think we shouldn't give up that idea".

Lions reportedly hosting RB DeMarco Murray on Monday
It didn't take long for recently-released Titans running back DeMarco Murray to find suitors in the free agent market . Murray, 30, was released by the Titans earlier this month after Derrick Henry grabbed the starting spot last season.

Canada and Mexico pushed back staunchly against steel and aluminum tariffs, with Canada in particular saying it'd be inconceivable to slap them on a close military ally under justification of a national security risk.

When asked about preventative measures for the dumping of surplus foreign steel, Trudeau says that he'll work with the US on any new measures, and that Canada will be a lot more active in the coming weeks on ensuring that government is protecting industry Canadian steel producers and its steel workers from "having to unfairly compete with folks who aren't following our rules" surrounding labour and environment.

"Our aluminum is in their fighter jets ‎our steel. goes into their armoured vehicles", he said.

Mr. Trudeau would not specify what actions the federal government will take to shut out offshore steel.

The prime minister departs today for Regina, Sask., where he'll be meeting with the city's mayor and steel industry leaders this afternoon.

Trudeau said the surplus of steel in the global market is not new and with American tariffs in place, some countries might try to ship their products to the USA through Canada.

Trudeau said Canada already has "significant barriers" in place to prevent low-priced steel and aluminum from being dumped there, and is prepared to work with Washington to "do even more". The steel tariff investigation was launched to see the impact of steel imports on USA national security.
