Sky Sports bosses will speak to pundit Jamie Carragher after he appeared to spit at a 14-year-old girl following Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Lineker sparked the exchange by making a joke about Jamie Carragher, who has been suspended by Sky Sports after an incident in which he was filmed spitting at a Manchester United fan's vehicle.

In retaliation, Carragher leans out of his window and spits towards the vehicle, spraying the 14-year-old girl.

The former Reds captain issued an apology on Sunday night, admitting he "lost his rag" after being goaded over Liverpool's 2-1 defeat on his journey home from the game.

Speaking to Sky News, the ex-Liverpool defender called it "a moment of madness".

The Manchester United supporting family of the girl spat at by Jamie Carragher does not want Sky Sports to sack the Liverpool legend.

Former Wimbledon player Vinnie Jones commented on the incident saying: "Spitting at 14-year-olds through a window?"

Carragher said on Sky that he had not tendered his resignation and that he hopes to keep his job.

"That has devastated me more than anything".

The girl's 38-year-old mum expressed her anger at Carragher, who has a daughter of his own, for spitting on the girl, calling it "the lowest of the low".

The Danish channel have moved quickly to take action against Carragher, whom the Daily Mirror claim will not lose his job at Sky Sports.

"I've just watched @Carra23 say sorry".

Sky said Carragher's actions were "well below the standards we expect of our people".

But Shreeves was having none of it and said: "No I haven't. I've got a daughter exactly the same age and I can't say how I'd react if someone did that to her".

Although the former footballer has issued a number of apologies since the incident on Saturday, Sky have chose to relieve the pundit from his duties for the foreseeable future.

He winced and nearly broke down as he was taken to task by interviewer Sarah Hewson during the TV spectacle, as he made a desperate bid to save his job and his reputation.

He went on: "I've made mistakes in my 25 year career, but this is the worst one".
