Bus driver killed in tour bus crash on I-10 identified

Baldwin County authorities tell FOX10 News the bus fell off westbound I-10 into a ravine at Cowpen Creek around 5:30 a.m. Sources say the bus was carrying students back home to Channelview, Texas, which is in the Houston area.

The driver of a chartered bus tour carrying band students from Channelview High School was killed when the bus plunged 50 feet into a ravine.

Six or seven Medevac helicopters transported patients to hospitals, the sheriff said.

Multiple rescue units responded Tuesday morning to a crash on I-10 eastbound near mile marker 57, Mobile Fire and Rescue said on social media.

Officials say out of the approximately 45 people who were on the bus, 12 to 20 people were hurt. The bus was carrying at least 52 people, according to KPRC-TV.

Sheriff Huey Mack Moss said both lanes on the interstate have been closed and Alabama State Troopers are asking motorists to avoid the area.

The company offering the bus service was First Class Tours, a Houston-based company that runs 58 buses and employs 94 drivers.

Several ambulances and helicopters were used to evacuate injured passengers, said Asst.

Authorities confirmed the driver had died, while one person was in a critical condition and at least five others were seriously injured.

Facebook user Jesus Tejeda posted the following video from this scene. The other bus arrived at Channelview High School at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. "Texas is prepared to offer any assistance necessary as we rally around the entire Channelview High School community during this hard time", he said in the statement.

The bus pulled into Channelview High School east of Houston under police escort Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the bus was transporting students and chaperones from Channelview, just east of Houston, KHOU reported.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

The company released a statement that reads in part: "Our prayers are with the injured and their families at this time".

"Then there was a loud, really huge crash that was presumably when the bus finally came to a stop", she said.
