'We had your backs': Trudeau on country's steel and aluminum workers

"We are very concerned about the actions taken by China and the dumping of steel and aluminum on the global market", Trudeau said following a tour of a steel and aluminum plant.

Eduardo Solis, president of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association and a former trade negotiator, said the USA already was going out on a limb by claiming that the steel and aluminum tariffs were needed for national security.

As the United States tries to light a fire under NAFTA negotiations, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada will not be bullied or pressured by the United States as part of those talks.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is brushing off the idea that Canada might be coerced into making concessions at the NAFTA negotiating table under the pressure of tariff threats from the United States.

The proclamation instead pointed to economic integration between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the fact the U.S. also exports steel to both Canada and Mexico, and the three countries' shared commitment to national security and addressing global excess capacity in steel production.

"(We're) highlighting that the imposition of tariffs on Canada would end up hurting the USA nearly as much as it would hurt Canada".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is heading to Canadian steel country this week on a three-day tour created to shore up the industry.

He made the point by mentioning in his CNBC interview that he was a few kilometres from the Bagotville air force base, built during the Second World War to protect critical aluminum supplies required by the military.

Kuchibhotla's widow welcomed the guilty plea. "We must understand and love one another", Sunayana Dumala said. An American national, Ian Grillot , 24, who tried to intervene had also been injured in the attack.

"I look forward to hearing directly from workers about how we can work together to address these issues and help our steel and aluminum industries grow and succeed".

Other stops will include Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Regina, Sask.

The Trump administration has set tariffs of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum, applicable to every country except Canada and Mexico.

Trudeau made the call from Alma, Quebec where he was touring an aluminum smelter, according to a release by Trudeau's office.

Canada is the largest market for the United States, with 283 billion US dollars worth of goods exported to Canada in 2017.

Trump's words only confirmed their suspicions when he seemed to link the metals tariffs with the 24-year-old trade deal that is being renegotiated in great part because of Mexico's big and growing trade surplus in autos and auto parts.

"But I accept what the president said", Trudeau added, "that as long as there is a free-trade deal in North America there won't be tariffs".
