A Kansas man pleaded guilty in state court Tuesday to killing an engineer from India in a high-profile hate crime that drew global attention and raised fears of growing intolerance in America.

Witnesses said Adam Purinton, who is white, yelled "get out of my country" before shooting Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, both 32, at Austin's Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas.

Madasani was Kuchibhotla's friend, and Grillot was a bystander at the bar who got shot in the hand and chest after he rushed Purinton as the gunman fired inside Austin's Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas on February 22, 2017.

On February 22, 2017, Purinton taunted Kuchibhotla and Madasani at the bar about their immigration. An American national, Ian Grillot, 24, who tried to intervene had also been injured in the attack. The alleged hate crime was the first suspected racist attack involving an Indian victim since US President Donald Trump assumed office. Purinton faces life in prison with no chance of parole for 50 years when he is sentenced on May 4 for premeditated first-degree murder.

Purinton has also been charged in federal court with a hate crime. He returned a short time later with a gun.

Purinton continued to confront the two men until Grillot and another bar patron told him to leave.

Kuchibhotla's widow welcomed the guilty plea.

"We must understand and love one another", Sunayana Dumala said.

The incident which is also being probed separately in a federal court as hate crime murder, who allege that he targeted Kuchibotla and Madasani due to their race, ethnicity or national origin, sent waves of shock globally.

Kuchibhotla, the man Purinton fatally shot, grew up in the south Indian city of Hyderabad and came to the United States to study engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso.

An affidavit released past year said Madasani told detectives that the gunman asked if their "status was legal" before he opened fire.

After the shooting, Purinton went to an Applebee's in Missouri where he allegedly told a bartender that he'd "just killed two Middle Eastern men".

Federal prosecutors have not yet said if they plan to seek the death penalty for Purinton.
